I'm looking to put an expansion EIDE controller in my dad's desktop so it can handle a new 500 GB drive (evidently the motherboard EIDE controller has the 137 GB limit). He got a 500 GB USB hard drive for it, too, and I was wondering if that would work...

Are USB hard drive sizes limited by motherboard controller? Which controller do you mean? If you're talking about the motherboard's hard drive controller (IDE/SATA.
With the install media that you're using.

On the other hand, will relegate you to either using the bios to choose which hard drive to boot or editing on a primary partition, but will install on a logical one.
Some experiment I did with hard drive read/write speed was 10MB/s write and 40MB/s read, and with a USB Flash drive, it can be 5MB/s write and 10MB/s read. Also, if I put a virtual hard drive .vhd file in a hard drive or in a USB Flash drive and try a...

In your case it depends on your....
So even if your flash memory was the same speed in both cases, the drive would have a higher potential throughput .
One big difference is that the flash drive is using the USB bus, while the drive is using the SATA bus .
Hi, My PC was running Ubuntu 9.10 with two hard drives installed. I recently installed Windows 7 and I have trouble accessing the content on the secondary hard drive. The Win7 recognizes both hard drives, as I can see the second hard drive on the disk...

If you need access to those files without booting....
Windows can't read those filesystems, so it can't see any files stored on the second drive .
Ubuntu probably formatted the other drive using the ext3 or ext4 file system .
You mean Ubuntu 9.04, I presume.
Are all ATA hard drives compatible? I've read about ATA and Ultra ATA, then there are speed differences within the category, i.e. Ultra ATA/33, Ultra ATA/66 Ultra ATA/100 and Ultra ATA/133. Does the capacity of the hard drive affect compatibility, i.e...

Yes, PATA (IDE) cables are all compatible with PATA (IDE) drives .
Typically, the answer is yes - but if you do it wrong (fast drive, slow cable/controller), it may just run a little slow .
I have recieved an old computer minus the hard drive. I had a hard drive lying around to put into it. However, when the previous owner removed their hard drive, they also took the clips required to insert the hard drive. Today, I got around to installing...
