Somehow I just don't have a lot of confidence that a SQL 2000 backup file will be usable in court cases or for historians in 25 to 100 years...

I've used it successfully to generate reports for survey data .
If you are generating PDF's offline (that is they don't need to be built dynamically and sent immediately to the user when he requests them) I would recommend using ERb and LaTeX .

VisualStudio may have a good toolset, but Apple's toolset is good enough (and pretty awesome, IMO) to have enabled 15K apps with over 500,000,000 downloads .
You are missing the point of Apple's toolset, IMO.
