A side question, you can run a PCI card in a pci-e PCI version....
Tried 2 other one more expensive and one cheaper PCI-E 1x looking at the ASUS Xonar Dx as a pci-e 1x card.
PCI version and it still performs excellent.

I have recently upgraded my rig from a Q6600 (w/ 5570) to a i5 3570k (OC 4.2), MSI Z77A GD55 and a 6870. Sufficed to say my games (Skyrim, ME3, TF2) run a lot better but it seems I have taken a step down on the sound front (its just a bit flat, too quiet...

Thanks for all the adviseAre you using a decent amp and speakers with optical input ?
That is your best option really.
The optical to see how it improves before buying a XFi PCI-E card.

What connects to PCIe 2.0 x1 slots?
Looking at the Asus P8Z77-V and I would use the following slots
2 X PCI-E3 for 2 cards in SLI
1x PCI-E2 for my soundcard
The board has build in Wi-fi and Blutooth which is great but I am left with 4 PCIe 2 x1 slots?...

That is what I have found anyway GTX680 cards running their best! The PCI-E 2.0 slot would not affect bandwidth of the PCI-E....
PCI-E x1 can be used for most cards except GPU.
Very little bandwidth.

I want to output surround sound from my HTPC to my Onkyo TX-SR602 receiver. The sound source will be AC3 avi or mkv files played through XBMC.
The HTPC is just an older Dell Dimension with PCI and PCI-E 1x slots available.
I figured any old soundcard ...

I saw there was a thread.
I took the liberty of reading a soundcard sharing irq with usb 3, sata or anything else is a good/bad thing.
This type of questions are normally best answered by teh mobo-manual.

RE my other posts about a studio build.
I'm wondering what the benefits (If any) would be for either.
PCI soundcard
USB external interface.
or
PCI Firewire card for external interface/soundcard.
I heard and read rumor's recently that seem to point towards...

PCIe would probably be the best choice at the moment for performance/reliability of Sandy Bridge Processors....
PCI(e) is generally faster than usb and firewire if the drivers are good and Thunderbolt/Lightpeak.
Not a lot of choice there.

The card can actually function without the molex....
It's there because PCI-E 1x can only provide a tiny amount of power.
And a mini-molex connector, because the PCI-E bus doesn't feed the card not.
E connection instead of PCI.

I just got me an X-Fi Extremegamer soundcard (lowest card that has X-Fi chip) and my fps shot up from 60-65 to 115-135 and above depending on the alt and map.
Just a heads up that soundcard and sound affects the framerate in the game. No this wasnt an...

Don't get anything lower video card and RAM, this....
They also now make PCI-E (x1)version (because thats the last best ANALOG soundcard) but that is no longer made.
So it is good since there is less air obstruction in the case .

I haven't used a PCI/PCI-e soundcard since...wow, the Soundblaster Audigy 2. Just wondering, now that I'm almost done with my new build, if I should consider an actual soundcard or if the onboard solutions are perfectly awesome for headphone gaming.
Thoughts...

But it all depends on what gear you are using, so if you use your PC to mainly play down from 11".
What kind of headphones? The biggest advantage for discrete soundcards is the ability to do my Titanium HD.
And stuff.
