I have a Shuttle SG31G2 that has an Intel G31/ICH7 chipset, one PCI slot, and one 16x PCI Express slot. I want to add a better gigabit NIC to it, and the PCI slot is already in use by a SATA card. According to this this diagram of the chipset , the x1...

However, the problem is if the PCI-Express slot.

Initially I'd say there's no real difference between the PCI-Express slots and as long as it fits there's no problem.

Answer Snippets (Read the full thread at serverfault):
Yes, it works just fine, obviously it's only work....
PCI-E x16 card will only go in a x16 slot .
PCI-E x4 card will go in a x4 or x16 slot .
Yes it is backwards compatable:
PCI-E x1 card will go in a x1, x4 or x16 slot .
Yes, PCIe is backwards compatible.

I'm trying to figure out whether my system supports PCI Express without opening up the box. lspci doesn't mention "Express" or "PCI-e" anywhere, but dmesg reports that a "PCI Express Hot Plug Controller Driver" is in use.

Simple, but works!
One thing to note is if your machine has a 1x, 2x, 4x, 8x, 16x PCI-E port and then buy the appropriate hardware... .
Easiest thing you can do is restart the machine and write down the model number then Google it and look up the specification .

I have a dell disk array that is a few years old as well as a pci-x scsi card. I would like to put pci-x scsi card in my dell r805. The dell r805 only has 4 pci express slots and no pci-x slots. I have searched all over google and have not found out the...

Definitely not ....
No it will not, PCI-X and PCI-E are very different hardware devices .
Let us know what model of disk array you have and we'll try to find you something that will work .
No it won't work, they're physically and electrically incompatible.

You can get PCIe-x1 variants....
I'd suggest just buying one with DisplayPort out (since you said you've found some) and buy a fairly cheap ($20CAD) DisplayPort to DVI adapter (since they're essentially the same) and throw your DVI to VGA adapter on the end .

I find that entry in the memory allocation list of my computer (Workstation -> Device Manager -> View -> Resource by Type). It takes up 256MB of RAM and I'm wondering what's it good for.

I'm wondering about the fact, that PCI architecture is hierarchical. Therefore, even if I have two PCIx4 slots, it's possible that I will not be able to fully utilize it, because the slots will connect in one node, which can have bandwidth insufficient...

In general the PCIe layout of a machine is dictated by the chipset, and if you can find a diagram from Intel or whoever you... .
At this point DDR2 can comfortably handle the data rate of 10Gbe .
Each PCIe (v1) lane should comfortably handle 2 x 1Gbe links .

My mobo has a PCI Express x4 (x8 Connector) spare currently and I need a low power useless graphics card to go in it to give me a 3rd output to power a 3rd 2407 dell screen - anyone know what i could drop into it to make this happen? (preferably nVidia...

Would a geforce 210 or GeForce 8400 GS do? they're passive, and only about £20 If it is just displaying basic documents... .
You could put in a GT 520 or 430, PCI-E x4 slots have open backs so full size PCI-E cards will work, just with reduced speed or something .

Hey guys, I was Wondering about the Radeon HD 7970. It says it requires PCI Express 3.0 but I can't seem to find a motherboard with a slot for it Unless they just go in the 2.0 slots (with an adapter maybe) Could anybody fill me in on what PCI Express...

You don't NEED a 3.0 slot (plus they're not out yet in a 3.0 slot rather than a 2.0 or 2.1 One day PCI Express 3.0 will be available on consumer motherboards, it's just not out....
PCI express cards are all backwards compatible.
