The web frontend is likely to require less memory than the SQL server and can use different specs .
If the costs are actually the same (Windows needs licences) then splitting them is a good option .

That said, you need a partition big enough to hold your entire Windows partition .
Warning: It's probably better to just create a new image, install Windows onto it inside the virtual machine, and then copy your data to it .

I know that in most cases when you buy a Dual-Core CPU for the same price you could get a Quad-Core, you end up getting 2 cores that are faster individually than the 4 cores individually in the Quad-Core CPU.

If it's a different architecture (x86 vs x86_64 vs amd64, etc.), then you will have to recompile .
If it's the same architecture, I don't think a recompile should be needed .
