I am considering trying going away from the shaving gel. I want to start with a simple process that is not too expensive. I will expand in the future if I find it better than just a gel.
I would appreciate a good starting recommendation for a rookie.....

It is cheap and lathers well.
It usally comes in a starter kit with a bowl and shaving brush .
It can be purchased at Wal Mart depending what country your in .
For a rookie just starting out I would recommend Van Der Hagen shaving soaps .

The M-Bomb is a good idea, just add a few drops to whatever soap you're using. .
Buy some M-Bomb from TSD and menthol up anything your heart desires! Ingrams, Italian Palmolive and Queen Charlotte Vostok are a few to try .

Now that my soap/cream AD is starting to subside, I'm thinking about brushes. Anyone have experience with the Vie-long horse hair brushes? Good, bad...indifferent? Shavetools has three different ones at the $18 price point.

Being one with a tendency toward addiction and compulsion, I feel the need to have 2 new/full...

If I assume 1 shave per gram of product, I'm good for nearly 12 years with all my soaps & creams.
You can look at my Shave Den inventory to see what I have .

I understand the concept of "a few strokes, lather builds up on blade, rinse off", but over time, I have found that I rinse the razor/blade less than I did originally. That "snow plow" effect with a significant amount of built-up soap/cream, really seems...

I'll have to check out your idea on the next shave .
Normally I like to keep the head of the razor fairly clean..rinsing frequently as I go, but if I understand correctly, you've presented an interesting new hypothesis .
