Why Am I Stuck With iTunes?
The whole software and hardware argument makes sense, except for the fact that Apple only restricts the newer iPods. One of my friends has a 3G iPod, and it easily syncs with Songbird, he has experienced no problems as of yet. I found that setting the Always Tune property to false made it less intrusive. If you are confident in your tuning or prepared to accept it if it misses a beat once in a while it may be worth trying that. It's possible the effect this has is more noticeable with other tuners but it certainly made a small improvement for me.
