Tracy Yes Tracy I agree, you would to messages, but why is it 2 1/2d and not 3d postage due for letter rate.
Any other theories quite welcome.
To 1/2d as their equivalent.

The reverse however is nearly flawless.

Since the 1904 2½d centre is black your example is consistent with fading .
I'd say this is a forgery that never quite got finished.Forgeries are known where the frame has been faded out and the necessary colours and values substituted .

That slight golden hue is catching just the devices and keeping the fields creating a slight cameo effect via toning .
The toning on the Yen is really nice.
