Can the drive you choose to boot off affect performance? Would I receive faster boot/shutdown times if I were to choose a smaller drive? How would partitions affect performance/boot speed? Assuming all drives are the same RPM, lets say 7200.

To choose a smaller drive?
most certainly, if you're using a WD Velociraptor as system drive.

I've got a 1TB hdd which is currently formatted as NTFS. I've recently learned about exFAT. I'm connecting this drive via USB. Which filesystem should I use for this large hdd and why?
(I know exFAT requires a patch on XP; this is not a concern).
Answer Snippets (Read the full thread at superuser):
If you want to tweak your hard-drive as much as it's possible try reading about.
It's in most ways inferior to NTFS for large drives.
Exactly do you plan to gain from formatting that drive with exFAT.

Does anyone know the magic incantation to disable the annoying blue led on the front of a LaCie 1TB High-Speed USB 2.0 external drive ?
The manual for that model doesn't mention the ability to disable it, but for the NAS model; there is the option.

A USB drive does not require.
The NAS requires configuration to know its IP address among other things .
Some method of remote configuration, a USB version of the same drive usually won't.

I checked last night the Hard Drive in Question was not listed in the boot.
If that does not solve the problem, look for an option to disable USB legacy support .
The external drive, then save and exit.

If you go for RAID 6, when one drive fails you can afford a further.
Is rebuilt to include its replacement.

Linux admins usually split their hard-drives into partitions for /usr space, os space and whole other kinds of swapness. I know windows7 requires 20GB at least for the OS to be installed. What is the best way to partition a single 1TB hard-drive (if any...

For the permissions, that has not been much of....
The issues with VFAT are that you will lose much of the overall capacity due to fragmentation and it access will be noticeably slower .
If you only want to access it from linux I'd go with ext3 at any rate .

According to the Product Manual , spin-up power is 3 A (peak) from the 12 V rail or 36W for 1 drive and 180 W time (which they are).
Be looking at about 15W per drive, which means that for five of these drives, it will be 75W.
