I just bought an LSI SAS 9211-8i HBA(Host bus adapter) to use with my new hardware. I realized after looking at the card that it required an x8 slot and my new mobo only x16 available. I keep on reading that PCI-E specs are backwards compatable however...

Yes, in the general case you can install PCI-E cards in any PCI-E slot that....
This goes against the intentions of PCI-E upgrade.

A lot of motherboard support pci-e 3.0 and soon there will be official pci-e 3.0 video cards out.
However, Sandy Bridge CPU's only support pci-e 2.0 in their expansion options.

2) I wouldn't.
To have Ivy installed to make use of PCI-E 3.

Hi everyone, I know most of the discussion surrounding x79's 40 PCI-e lanes has to do with bandwidth for 3 way SLI/Crossfire and the bandwidth advantages. MY question is: what happens when you use 3 non-GPU PCI-e cards, does that have the same impact ...

One of our less-critical servers seems to have lost the use of its onboard SATA controller -- which was managing the software-mirrored boot volume.
The simplest and cheapest fix was to buy a 2-port SATA controller at the local Fry's -- or so it seemed...

I am not sure how much of performance....
Performance wise, you are at the limits of your pci bus.
It will plug right in and the last portion of the card will not be used in the slot .
A lot of those 64bit PCI cards can be used with 32bit slots.

I'm trying to get an old PCI video card (Diamond Stealth 2500) along with a normal PCI-E video card.
In BIOS, there is a setting to switch between PEG/PCI or PCI/PEG on startup (PEG is PCI-E Graphics). When I use PCI/PEG only the old PCI card works, when...

To flesh out a server build, Damonte needs a PCI Express or even a PCI video card. Wondering if anyone has an older one they are interested in selling on the cheap. No performance required, just something to plug a monitor into.
Cheers.

It is a 2X/4X AGP slot on a system with the BIOS showing 2003 for the MOBO. I have been told by the person reading something during a call to the Manf. that it shows as a first generation 2.0 compliant slot. Should a 4X card bought here work and are there...

That said, your system is so old that it may be a better idea to just buy a new machine .
Usually AGP is backwards compatible.
