I did a search on it and i figured out the pros and cons of both cases. I narrowed it down to this.
The 242 is slightly weaker, but if you are testing the limits of the 242, you'd also be testing the limits of the 231. The 242 is also slightly heavier...

A few other things it to me doesn't matter which trans case you end up getting with your XJ .

Here is my situation,
I ordered the wrong SYE and drive-shaft from TomWoods driveshaft. I didn't think to look at the tag on the transfer case, being lazy I thought hay its not all wheel drive so I don't have the 242, duh..
The question is, should I swap...

The TW 242 SYE is a standard....
There is also no "real" HD SYE shaft for the 242.
As you can probably tell, the 231 has more aftermarket support .
And 242 has full-time option.
Major difference is 231 is part-time 4wd only.

If you decide to do a Chrysler HO engine swap (1991-2001) you may have a bit more work ahead of you .
Since your motor is a Renix type (1987-late 1990) any other year of Renix engine should work (from either a Cherokee or Comanche) .
