I need to move to DS 4.0.We are using DS 3.1 currently.

3.1 -> 4.0 works, but then you can check all logs from....
Be sure you have everything backed up before you do upgraded we use the 3.1 -> 3.2 -> 4.0 upgrade path.
You can upgrade directly from 3.1 to 4.x.
