My Wii's disc drive isn't working anymore, so I thought I'd ask -- is there a reasonable way to softmod it without the drive? It's sitting in a desk drawer which seems a shame right now...

Any other drive works great with x360usb, but my experience tells me samsung is....
Do as the user above told you about pmt and flash the drives without any problem.
Need any 360 drive probe or a wire needle and solder.

Right now, you've only two drives and one of them is known to flash the....
As I said the reason for the second not testing the drive before you started.
And it works perfectly for every other drive (hitachi, samsung, benq etc).

You can use your xbox 360 to power the drive while extracting the key that it is sufficient to just use the xbox 360 console itself when you are powering the dvd drive, while you drives ....
Should be set at this point.
