I'm currently looking into purchasing a LED TV which should be around 42 inch. However I find the whole 3D TV confusing.

Isn't the problem that the tv isn't 120Hz? The TV needs to be able to understand the 3D signal.

It sounds like your TV is not properly detecting the different 3D signal.
Or else the TV won't recognize that it's 3D compatible?
It shouldn't matter since Xbox is only HDMI 1.2 anyway.

Well a 3D TV is a smart TV and has many of the same features as the so called SmartTV's just it has them.
