My mate bought a 2nd hand iphone3G and is wondering if his old sim card will work in it.
I have an iphone 4 and know its a micro sim. Not sure of 3G.
Also, can he continue using his PAYG "tariff" or will he need to contact o2 to move onto an internet/...

As your mate is on PAYG and not tied into a contract I recommend he checks out depends on what....
As for the tariff that all to the 3G network.
If the iPhone was originally on O2 or is unlocked yes it should work.

Just picked up my daughter a second hand iphone for Christmas but it appears to be locked to O2 - it didn't recognise my own T-Mobile sim so must presume it's locked.
Is it a straightforward procedure to get it unlocked to the 3 network so she can continue...

As above really. I've upgraded to a 4S and was going to give my phone (bought via O2) to my sister (who's on Orange).
Is the phone locked to O2 or will any other network's sim cards work in it without a problem?
I know other phones on O2 would let you...

o2 contract phones used to be unlocked so there is a good chance it will work - however if it doesn't, assuming the contract the phone was tied to (if it was a contract phone) is now complete, o2 answer: there....

I jumped on the Iphone band wagon just before the Iphone 4 arrived, they were still pushing the Iphone 3GS at the time and I think that O2 still had some kind of exclusivity ?
Non the less I took out one of the whopping contracts (2 years at £45 p/m)

I would go with a payg tariff maybe like giffgaff or one of the networks do sim only packages what network is giffgaff based on? i stuck with o2 for their decent reception.

I only wanted to unlock it so I can use another sim abroad.
It should come up on the iTunes screen saying "Your iPhone is now for "genuine and loyal" customers.
With iTunes with the new sim card in.

Honestly, my advice would be to get your hands on a free 'Three' PAYG SIMO2 do offer 1GB of data as well as 100MB and 500MB options, so don't let that put you off.
