Can I revert back to Ubuntu 9.04 when I've upgraded to 9.10? I really want to install Ubuntu 9.10 but I'm scared if it does not work, if I will be able to go back to 9.04?

Might even get an option to copy your 9.04 profile to that installation while its being setup.

If you have that installed you can try running the command below to flush it:
sudo /etc/init.d/nscd restart
Second, if you don't have nscd installed, you can... .
First, Ubuntu doesn't cache dns by default, but there is a dns caching deamon available (nscd) .

The mysql website offers non-RPM binaries of their cluster server:
http://dev.mysql.com/downloads/cluster/7.0.html#Linux_ (non_RPM_packages)
I've used their pre-packaged binaries in the past and they seem to be pretty easy... .
I'd say compile it yourself.

Nowadays I wait about 3 months, so it's a bit more stable, and compatibility issues are addressed (there is always something incompatible at first, trust... .
I've learned not to do that, the hard way.
In the past I upgraded as soon as a new version came out .

I want to install VMware Player on Ubuntu 9.04. The official VMware download page does not have a deb package. Should I use their RPM? Or is there a better way to do this?

I have installed Ubuntu 9.04 in my laptop, but there is no sound. Can someone give some suggestion about how to fix it? I am a new user.

What kind of sound card do you have? Is pulseaudio running?
Ubuntu 9.04 had many.
Fixes somewhat.

The target machine has XP (SP2) installed, and the goal is to install Ubuntu 9.04 as a dual-boot. Ten years ago, this would require preparing the disk with something like Partition Magic, but I think there has been progress. Am I likely to need anything...

Check WindowsDualBoot

The Ubuntu 9.04 Desktop CD is enough.

I'm going to install the Windows 7 RC soon and want to save all (almost all) of my settings that I have in ubuntu 9.04 right now. How can I do this?

This ....
If it's just a desktop machine then backing up your home directory /home/ username will be enough .
Ok this really depends what you use your machine for .
All settings should be in those two folders.
Copy your entire home directory (~/) and /etc.
