And if you expect to do a lot of printing, you'll make back the $300 difference in ink cost more prints....

In Acrobat or Reader at the time of printing to a3 and have the aspect ration maintained? If sogiven your printer prints to A3 size paper, I'd set your page size in xara to A3 - and paste up the A4 size pages in position....
