I have to admit I've been slack and had to allow 60 updates on my laptop. But since then the top of the screen has changed. I used to have a bar across the top showing my favourites, quick access to AB and various other links. Is there any chance of getting...

Could it be that you moved from IE8 to IE9 which has the favourite bar in a different place?
If so you could always uninstall 9 and reinstall 8.
