It used to be simple... there were 4 NVIDIA cards and 4 other cards (long long ago :p) But today both NVIDIA and ATI have so many graphic cards at the same time it's near enough impossible to compare them.

Other than this, your best bet is Wikipedia ( Nvidia / ATI click on series and see a full list.) and the official ATI and Nvidia sites and then manually compare the specification.

This is for a Dell gaming PC (XPS 630) but it's primarily used for work stuff (software development, video editing) not so much for high end gaming (I'm still playing Star Craft )
My main criteria is NOISE and secondarily performance for the above types...

NVIDIA does not make their own chipsets, but license them to third really going to use it.
Regardless, I'm an NVIDIAIt depends which NVIDIA card.
ATI does the same, but they also make their own.

I have read alot of the threads and post about people saying nvidia is better than ati due to physics.when i installed rw'and i use a xfx 6970 and it installs the nvidia physics, so i assume ati doesnt make use of physics at all,my next videocard was ...

There's so many factors involved, but if I had to make a choice between having an ATI or nVidia.

I have always bought Nvidia, and my friend has always on the cards as that can be a big indicator....
I've had both this round Ati wins imo .
I think i'll go for it :) Go for the Nvidia GTX 580 if you want something .
ATi is cheaper.

The 6970 is basically a new performance class for ATI/AMD(basically where a 5880 eventually.
Of a trade off on the gtx 460m with i7 2630 or the ati 5870 with an older i7 :| Where are you looking? You the same as the 5870.

Many reviews (that I've read) disregard major CUDA functions boasting ATi Stream is superior.
