I'm trying to install Windows 7 and it says that I need to turn off my anti-virus. I'm running AVG Anti-Virus Network Edition 8.5 and I can't figure out how to turn it off. How do I turn it off?

Open the AVG 8.5 Control Center, by right....
Uninstall AVG temporarily.
Or ...
2 options:
start > run > type services.msc and click OK
stop all AVG related services.
Right-click on the system tray AVG icon and click Exit.

I want to install an anti-virus, but the downloads (AVG) need me to connect to the internet to install. Isn't it dangerous to connect to the internet before I've installed the anti-virus?
Oh, and this is an ancient laptop and I've just re-installed Win...

In terms of free, no strings attached anti-virus programs, AVG has been at the top of the heap for a while, but is it still there?
Or are there others that people would recommend?
Also, who is trustworthy/reliable in the anti-spy/malware game nowadays...

I haven't had a case trigger in years so....
To download and set up any of the good and free anti-virus programs out and ignore it after settingAVG is still great and hassle free, and free
Malwarebytes followed by Spybot Search and destroy.

Did I get anyone's attention? I used to love and install AVG on any system I installed.
Working as an IT contractor I have come across several computers trashed by Virus & Trojans that all had AVG installed.
It appears that AVG is not catching the latest...

It used to be AVG and paying the $25 for realtime protection is worth it.

Most folks here will tell you that you need layered security .
AVG is capable of protecting you but I would recommend you buy Malwarebytes just incase if something slips by AVG that and It would help you keep MBAM up-to-date.

Doc Computers verified since 1972 I had a very difficult time uninstalling avg antivirus.
If you have used the avg cleanup tool, that is about as much as you can do, short of contacting AVG.
