I understand that the power to think about abstract things is very handy in programming well. Abstraction is usually a mental map, an image that you can refer to in your mind as you are progressing with writing your code.

You will quickly learn the "art with Hadoop (Pig, Cascading, etc.) or another dataflow abstraction.
Better yet, maintain lots of BAD code.
Write lots of code.

Can you properly relate to abstract art? As in, do you see the message the painting is conveying or the sentiment it is showing or the lesson it is teaching or whatever? Do you believe that some abstract art are over-recognized as being great and genius...

I broke some of the cardinal rules for hiring and am now stuck with a fairly 'bad' hire. My biggest concern is that the person's abstract thinking is really weak.
