You could also take a look at Sludge , the engine behind impressive games....
It allows you to create the rooms it helps you build your own adventure game.
The Adventure Game Studio (AGS) tool is perfect for doing this.

If this game is two dimensional (or 2.5 which are appropriate for such a game.
