Personally, I'm happy with the Extreme for the AirPort....
The Extreme runs a lot cooler than the Time Capsule (but its still toasty and Airport Extreme support dual band simultaneous radios.

As a proud owner of twoI am not aware of any firmware for the modern Airport base stations other than the official Apple.
So far there has yet to be any firmware hacks for the Airport Extreme.

In my other question , I was trying to set up my mac as a server, and the thing they suggested after is setting it to a static local ip outside of the DHCP range so I could port forward to that and it would never change.

I extended really gotten to deep into....
We don't have any old legacy hardware that can't find the airport extreme.
Hardware has problems not finding your airport extreme then you may have to make a guest account set frequency.
