Hi!
If you have to add protein in a broodmare's diet otherwise balanced on others elements. What would be your first choice?
Straight alfafa hay (or hay with enough alfafa in it) isn't really available in the area.

One way we've found to lower the cost a bit is to cut "Trotter" complete pellets.

I switched his mix to one with smaller pieces (Ecotrition) and for variety, and I gave him more fresh... .
He stopped eating the larger, chunkier items in his Hazel Hamster mix (i.e., most of the mix) .
This has happened to my aging hams, most recently to Ping .

Rice bran pellets or oil helps.
Add more fat to the diet helps too.
But there use to be Alfalfa pellets and it looked like a regular pellet feed.
