I have a sweater's worth of Gedifra's "Samina" which is a similar yarn with a nylon net cylinder instead of silk, enclosing a poofy....

Hi, I just started crocheting last week and I bought 100% Acrylic, worsted weight yarn.
And the yarn... This yarn is frustrating sometimes, as the strands split and got hooked when I pull it... Dang it makes the whole process much longer as I had to undo...

As to the shedding....
My guess is that the merino felted together faster and that is why it was swallowed by the alpaca.
Sara,
Alpaca fiber has primary fibers, which tend to be straight and may stick out on felt much faster than alpaca.
