I hate it....it such a nuisance on the phone, and I do it for a living, so I hardly ever talk on the phone on my own time- except a newer phone.
I will only answer yours if you are on the other end.

Just so I understand, if I change or update my phone I have to go and re-buy all the applications I bought for my original phone? This is really bad as I bought over $50 in apps and now I want to update to a different phone!

You cannot keep numbers just on the phone.
There's a My Contacts Local app that you can download if you really want with the phone (showing a name instead of a number when you get a call for example).
