I'm thinking of creating an answering machine in android that automatically alerts the caller that he/she has reached the answering machine after an alloted time and then records the message. Is it possible in android?

You do not have any way to play audio to the caller .

Are there any free or commercial answering machine software that can be programmed to play different message based on the datetime of call?

Is it possible to create an iPhone application to answer incoming voice calls and play audio files back to the caller? If yes, before answering the call, is it possible to determine the caller id?

There is no way for an android SDK application to access the call input or output on this hardware/firmware combination .
This is not possible on the tmobile G1 at this time .

Whenever a message is left on my machine it ends with the "fast busy signal". It's almost as if the answering machine can't detect the switchhook signal and the fast busy signal is FIOS digital voice dropping the line. I've had various phone carries prior...

I have the same exact problem when the call is dropped with the answering machine - fast busy a newer model answering machine (mine is 9 years old).

No thoughts on how, but we have a home phone and an answering machine.
If you no longer have the owners manual, google the make and model of your answering machine exactly.

We have a Panasonic KX-TG2367 answering machine.
While I was in Portland mom somehow erased the greeting message recorded on it and it went back to the default machine greeting.
I'm assuming the message is recorded to a chip?
