$350 for an Apple TV 2 is rediculous, especially for an Apple ....
There's hints that it's coming soon but there's no definitive yes or no so it's still speculation/interpretation .
I'd wait for the Apple TV 3 jailbreak.

Does anyone know if an Apple TV can play movies that are located on a remote share? For example, I rip my movies and store them on a NAS device. Can Apple TV be configured to play the movies over the network?

It's one of the best is installed onto the Apple TV built-in harddrive but you will still be able you use your Apple TV software....
You can also add XBMC on an Apple TV.
This guide will get you up and running.

Apple has released a new update for the generation 2 and 3 Apple TV models. The update allows movies and TV show previews from the iTunes Store to be viewed in HD and fixes a few other minor issues.

It SHOULD work if one's on the router and one's on the switch, but in practice I find that it sometimes doesn't .
If you are using a router as well as a switch, try connecting both the computer & appleTV to the same device (router or switch) .
