UCL is one of the finest institutions to certainly WILL have heard of....
Friends don't seem to have heard of UCL, any of the "good" grad schools you are considering applying are thinking, maybe you can give us some more information.

I have the equivalent of a 2:2 and want to go to UCL, but their admissions requirements are 2:1. My degree is from UCLA, which from what I have read counts for something despite GPA. I have also been to 5 field schools, and presented a paper at a conference...

I would say statistics in UCL is a well respected course.
Might be a bit different from yours.

I only mention it because I did my MA in Translation via distance learning with the University of Portsmouth and found it to be very good. I imagine the syllabus would be quite similar from Uni to Uni. The Uni of Portsmouth gives you a very good balance...
