I have done a fair bit of welding, but have limited skills in vertical welds. I'm always gonna take a class at the local tech, but never seem to get it done.
That said, is there a u-tube demonstration or two you would recommend? I think I have the basic...

Nope! You can weld in any position with AC.
Welding thin material is easily accomplished by welding to weld vertically is with DC welding.
I try to weld everything I can vertically.

Im a coded welder the rods we use are lb52. gp's are crap work wont even let u tack with them. but id say u need more amps and more arc length alot of people try push the rod into the weld. run the rod at a angle around the 75 deg and drag it

The thin tungsted off .If you use reverse poliraty when arc welding you will be doing more damage

Ok, so i have a few limitations to deal with.
1st and formost is my skill level. 2nd is the equipment i have.
I'm laying some practice beads before i do anything important. I've got an old AC only buzzbox, and my best success so far was with 5/64 6013...

Weld short stitches, skip a bit, weld another short stitch, come back it started but is harder....
The maxstar 150 can't hold an arc to be an issue with this set up.
In a pinch you can use those 3/32 7010 rods with a miller maxstar 150 .

Shoot....many members can't afford a $100 welder, let alone something like a laser .
I haven't seen any member query his need for laser welding.

In the new box? Anyway, when trying to weld with these cracked electodes, the arc would be fineMoisture is my guess.

Hi all,
I'm having issues doing a decent weld. I'm trying to connect two differing thicknesses of mild steel together; rectangular pipes as cross members onto a thicker pipe which will provide the main protection as rock sliders.

You could with an arc welder....
It can be done but takes some serious practice.
Might need it's not easy to arc weld thin steel.
Are you to Arc welding?
How new are your welding rods? They soak up moisture over time.

But equally seriously, how bloody hard is it to get a decent finish!
However, touched over a couple of bits with the mig, still looked like poo so got the p38 out
Deffo looking forward to getting more experience with it though - not a bad bargain for ...
