To auto assign the meshes, open the CS with no mods .
Click on the texface button in blender after you have UV Mapped your mesh, then hit F12 to render to scroll between meshes using just the arrow keys.

But you can.
The problem is Css cannot replace the arrow in a select as this is rendered by the browser.

Based on your text, and testing the arrows on my machine, I would say this....
If you click the picture, you'll go to an unscaled version .
Doesn't look as bad on my system, but still looks less than ideal .
WinXP, IE7 side by side with FireFox 3.5.5.
