Briefly, atheism literally means "non-theism", where theism is the belief in at least one god.

If atheism is just the lack of religious belief, then why do atheists say positively that there is no God? Such a claim posits a belief, not just a negative lack of belief.

It doesn't propose there's no god, and they are atheists too since they too lack belief in gods.
Atheism is the state of lacking a belief in God.
Atheism is not a 'belief'.
They are of their opinion.

We are often told by religionists of every stripe that atheism is 'a belief' or even that it is 'a belief system,' one essentially no different from religion and religious beliefs. This is a charge which I feel must be defended, for if it is not it stands...

It might be appropriate....
I don't think at the outset that atheism is a belief - and for simplicity I will say that a 'belief' is an affirmatory.
Or belief system, or atheism / atheists compared or likened to theism / theists.

The Catfish Blues Atheism deals with belief, gnosticism is an atheist.
You are defining your terms wrong.
Agnostic atheists simply lack a belief in a god.
Atheism deals with belief, gnosticism deals with knowledge.

The whole "God" debate in terms of theism vs atheism is meaningless as far as I'm concerned.
One is a belief in the existence but those words themselves box you in.
At the extremes of theism and atheism just seems niave at best.
