Nonetheless, to be a religion there must be : belief in a supernatural being, thing or principle , and acceptance of canons of conduct....
Polytheists can't be considered atheists, since they do.

I would guess that atheism is only a recent phenom because we are finally having good science to compete....
You mention in your question - "atheism", "belief", "make believe", and even "worship" and "fear of the unexplainable thing.
Wikipedia defines atheism as follows: “Atheism is, in a broad sense, the rejection of belief in the existence of deities.” Do religions represent more than "believe in deities"? What about is then atheism and what does it reject?
