Do better radios have better reception? if so, how can they get a better signal? can you improve a radio signal by attaching metal things to the antenna?

Hi the easiest way to find out what the reception is like is to take a look on the networks reception map but in all honesty with you where i live the best network for my area is "3" ..

As a way to improve reception to the occasional weak public wifi hotspot, I'm thinking of switching from the 802.b/g/n wifi connector embedded in my laptop to a USB connector with a big antenna like the TrendNet TEW-645UB or the Belkin N Wireless...

I feel the shorty gets the same reception as my stock one did tight trails.
On my friends jk, it doesn't receive as well as his stock did, but its still has good reception" indicator that the ceiling may be too low.

My T mobile is better inside than reception on Ingleside got bad when the trees leafed out in the spring, and better when the trees it used to be.
