Should i wear a helmet when biking on trails? do you think its necessary to wear a helmet when biking on trails, or taking short rides around the neighbourhood?

Wife and I recently updated our bikes. We welcome any CF input on the best biking trails in Iowa (or midwest US). Prefer paved, but packed crushed limestone would be OK, too. Thanks. (Not interested in mountain-biking trails.)
