For many years I have heard what I initially thought was a road sweeper outside, usually between 3.45-4.45am. It actually sounds like it's landing in the garden! But I could rarely be bothered to fully look.
Now there is a normal helicopter outside circling...

I'd be interested in your ideas about what they are there to do? When you observe them are they toing and froing or just hovering? If they're moving then presumably they're patroling, ferrying people or objects, or searching... .
