I get a black screen after I login, with a window of Windows explorer open. I have to manually ctrl+alt+del->Task manager->Run and run explorer.exe before desktop shows up.
How can I remedy this?

Used to work before....
It works for me.
Before but now I've gone back to it I get this error whenever in full screen mode.
I have not tried any work-arounds yet.
Running 2x6870, Win7 64bit, 8 GB RAM.
And then locks-up at black screen.

Recently (eg. in the last week or two), when I RDP to one of our servers running Windows Serve 2003 64bit, the login screen is black.
If you can guess what it is prompting, then you can still login, and once you get past the login screen the desktop displays...

From root login in my newly installed fedora 8 . when i type startx i get black screen. I have solved this before . its something like i just need chose the display as a standar VGA or something . but i dont remember how to select the display . any help...

The computer was on all night because it failed to go to sleep properly. It was also very hot in the morning. This is not irregular for the machine (it's a laptop). Restarted, and the diskcheck started automatically...

Others are probably right that it died, but try fiddling with your brightness controls first... .
The backlight is off.
If it's not under guarantee, find a repairman or pay Dell .
