The soil it's currently in is very thick and heavy.
To know what's the best soil for it (bonsai wise) Look at the post before this one on cat litter as a bonsai.

Be sure its high.
There's lots of brands of clay soil amendments.

With the maple I used the soil that was originally in the pot, along with some used what it came in for soil, it....
I'm no bonsai expert, but if the plan is to make it look Greybeard likes this.

This is one of ours; from IKEA. We have a couple of others I've bought...
