How about honey dippers for boro is "lab glass" like in test tubes, ....
You'd be better of sandblasting.
The sticks they would be able to very easily like that a little sandblast might help a bit I don't think boro etches very well.

Do you have to use boro rod for fuming with silver foil or can i use any old clear ?
if the answer is yes it has to be boro because has anyone got a spare rod (or long short ) i can have /swop /buy

It's better with boro, because your effettre rod will melt!
It's even better with quartz (silica rod of boro from Off Mandrel Plowden & Thompsom also sells boro as much or as little as you want cobalt 6 or NS turbo cobalt or any super....

For just starting out in boro I highly recommend buying seconds both northstar and Glass alchemy sell seconds and they sell from $20-35 a pound not on sale.
