Looking to get a bike this summer, using an old beater for the first 1 or 2 Sprints and if all works out well and I am as committed as I think I will be should I get a used tri bike or hold out longer for a new one. The budget will probably be less than...

Just replace the brakes i would take the brakes off it makes the bike lighter.
