I would try that first, but with sand coming your waterlines, or ....
The kits can be installed without digging up the hydrant.
Don't know about your particular hydrant.
On the end of the shaft located at the bottom of the hydrant.

Now I thought most of those older fire extinguishers were copper .
I wouldn't chance it.
Small brass fittings can.
And older brass has even more lead in it.
