I'd like some kind of string comparison function that preserves natural sort order 1 . Is there anything like this built into Java? I can't find anything in the String class , and the Comparator class only knows of two implementations. I can roll my own...

At first guess, it's probably traversing the data in the order in which it's stored order.

I've noticed that pagination gems like mislav-will_paginate are quite popular. Is this because Rails does not have a built-in pagination solution or because the built-in solution is not very good?

It has pagination built in and many other? %table %tr %th= order_by_link....
Unless you on how to use Rails pagination I'd recommend searchlogic .
Rails has built-in pagination, but it's a simple module and not suitable for all needs.
