Im looking to install the thin grips using a proper screwdriver bit. Is there anything else to do, soak the bushings in penetrating oil, apply heat, etc,? Does Colt locktite them on? I want to install thin grips.

This is more likely to be evident when installing, or especially removing , the thin type... .
A proper screw driver will work, but there's a chance of slipping, and gouging your expensive gun .
