I use pieces of the packing material for protection when=pd_cp_hi_2 Sears/Craftsman butcher block table top $87 with discounts.

Are you talking about ceramic tile? Is this tile going to be part of the cutting surface? I would not recommend this as the tile will dull your knives in no time! Dan in So.Ca .

If im gluing wood together to make a table or butchers block what kind of plane do i use? so my friend just made a huge end grain table using long pieces of wood that he used a mechanical plane on (im assuming) and then used a hand plane to tidy it up...

To tidy up and smooth off the wood is a block plane it is in fact what the plane was designed to do and named after, the best one to use is a low angle block plane .The finial tidy up of this type.

Remember that the panel will be expanding and contracting with seasonal changes in relative humidity. Being in a kitchen adds to the possibility of movement. You will have to figure out how to fix the counter to its support frame so that it can freely...
