I've bought "Programming Ruby" from Pragmatic Programmers (still in beta), but friends say that "The Ruby Way" is much better. Should I buy it or wait for Ruby 1.9 books?

Probably best to go ahead and buy the recommended book, this video will give some ideas safest to get the Ruby 1.8 book, learn the stable version of the environment, and if you find It's an excellent reference book for either....
Let's suppose that I would prefer not to buy books from Amazon.com. Does anyone have any other favorite sites for buying tech books? Inexpensive, easy to find books, usable wishlist, and good selection would be nice, of course.

Half.com and Powell's are great places to buy used books.
I usually look for the book on http://www.google.com/products and buy it from the cheapest place like Amazon is doing.
So, about books... any you're loving right now? I'm finishing up the book "A Stolen Life" (The story of Jaycee Dugard). and I need a rec for my next book. Thinking of giving Hunger Games a shot, but heard it's hit or miss. Side note: got a Kindle Fire...

As an EE turned software engineer I missed on on the computer science basics. Are the Donald Knuth "The Art of Computer Programming" books worth buying as a reference for filling in the gaps? Or as a reference in general?

Might not need Donald Knuth's books, but do pickup a book or two on data structures and algorithmsIMHO Knuth's books (though it's been long since I read them) are more of a general reference than an easily-applied textbook.

After all....
The books I buy are more about concepts and methodologies, stuff.
The only books I buy instead of borrowing because once I'm done reading it I can use it as a reference as a reference for languages and frameworks.
My new workplace has no programming books. For some reason every programmer, if he needs a book, buys it for himself personally and he might get reimbursed if he can make a business case for this purchase (i.e. convince the boss). I'm used to situation...

Especially when he knows developers will buy the books themselves anyway.
In all honesty, if you've got a boss like that I doubt you're going to convince him to buy books.

I usually search for a book on Amazon and then buy it off Ebay ; ...it's a lot cheaper....
Amazon's used bookstore facilities are great, and you can buy the books a lot and reasonably priced.

Steam is great too, I use it to buy games, but I want of War 2, in the UK you could buy it for....
The same goes for the Zune.
Yes, I buy digital music and books but only when-devices, etc.

I agree, this is one of the best book about The C....
I would not recommend books about a something that changes fast, I have for example of the best books I've read on Java development, J2EE or not.
