Do you think it is better to have a gym membership or to buy the equipment that you like? We have two gyms in town--one is right down nasty and the other does not keep up with maintenance on the building --it is ok but IMO too expensive for the condition...

Most people don't have the means to buy enough equipment to get the most can recoup some of the money invested by selling the equipment on.

Relatively "budget-neutral" with any new acquisitions (i.e., I buy most of my gear used, off AM or CN, and any new purchases are usually balanced out by equipment sales of similar value).

A tool for fitting caps can be useful but not essential... .
Tallow (If you want to be authentic) or light pump grease or vaseline .
If you are buying a cap and ball revover you will need grease to cover the loaded chambers to prevent cross ignition.
