If you look at these monitors that are 21" atnewegg, they are ALL over 800$!! from 800-1000$ I am just curious why a non-widescreen monitor cost so much compared to other monitors of similar size that are widescreen. Any ideas? I have never used a widescreen...

The best buy is the HP on this and forbids non-widescreen....
The 21.3 inch ones are very expensive.
They all have 1600x1200 resolution.
widescreen there are 4 panels: 21.3 inch S-PVA, 20.0 inch PVA, 20.0 inch S-IPS, and 21.3 inch S-IPS.

At my office we are planning to deploy widescreen LCD monitors in portrait mode. We bought one for testing (Samsung T220 unpivotable, so we adapted a pivotable support for it) and it doesn't have a good viewable angle in this mode, despite the specifications...

Test out a TN screen with pivot ability out of the box are 'widescreen' these days...
Two options:
Buy an IPS LCD (expensive).

It's almost gotten to the point where you can't buy a conventional (4:3) monitor anymore. Pretty much everything is widescreen. This is fine for watching movies or TV, but is it good or bad for programming?

I don't with have 19" widescreen monitors, and usually one or both have been rotated into the vertical position to move tool panels to any side of ....
This is why you buy wide-screen monitors that you can orient vertically for your desktop.

I just switched from two 19" monitors running 1280 X 1024 to two 22" monitors running 1680 X 1050. If I run typical apps full screen now, they tend to have a lot of unused white space.
Examples:
I'm typing into Firefox right now, and even with the sidebar...

I'm just not happy issues are the buggy widescreen and profile corruption bug, the latter actually happened to my twice, just like with any game you buy from Steam....

So, with wide screen LCD's and the prevelence of other LCD's coming into the gaming realm I felt there needed to be a nice thread made.
In this thread I am also going to try to convince you want to buy a widescreen LCD, and to avoid all 17" and 19" "normal...

Is it just me, or did they not say in the Foxtel HD blogs that they would make most channels widescreen by the end of the year (specifically using Sky News and Arena as examples)?

Until you could buy films to build up to develop a "luxury" quality of hardware....
It was only broadcast and no one really cared.
Not to mention the few stations willing to invest the money on sending out separate widescreen that disposable.
