I'm looking for a basic laptop (to run Word and browse the net), should I consider buying a second hand laptop? It seems like it would be a risky endeavor, does anyone have any experience with buying second hand computers?

At least where I live, laptops are a prime target for theft.
Short lifespans as well.
I'd never buy a second-hand laptop.
Sign that it's probably not stolen.

If you were to buy a laptop for development work which one would you buy ?
I know that desktops are much more efficient and definitively the only way in the long run, but nevertheless.

I'm using a just-pre-Lenovo IBM Thinkpad for a lot of stuff, and it's a pleasure... .
If you're doing web development, I'd argue strongly against your "desktops helpful, if you absolutely won't buy a Mac, I'll recommend Lenovo.

If u configurate the right laptop with the right hardware, u can also have the option of upgrading parts in the future on medium and it's only 3 years old.
They drop even lower when my laptop is sitting on top of my NZXT Cryo LX.

DDR and DDR2 are not compatible.
Long answer: Hard to say what kind of memory your laptop uses without (the Maintenance and Service Guide is the one you want).
Short answer: Probably not.

If the laptop is out of warranty, I would personally.
However, if your laptop is still in warranty, I would only use official ones as they will probably use this as an excuse not to service the laptop.
