If your CPU is that hot, you really should remove the heatsink fan, re-apply some good thermal paste, and re-apply the heatsink and fan.
Compared to 'normal' operation.

The fan should continue to work while in the BIOS may need to be replaced.
Enter BIOS setup, wait a minute or two, and see whether the fan or not your issue is hardware or software related.
This might be a hardware problem.

I've had fans seize up like the little bearing cover sticker off the fan, put in a drop of oil and reseal it.
It should spin freely.

I've installed lm-sensors and ran sensors-detect successfully. It edited my /etc/modules so the needed modules ( lm85 , i2c-i801 and coretemp ) would get loaded during startup.
I added also those nice applets to my upper Gnome panel.

I set my CPU and Case fans to User in BIOS and set the CPU fan to user in Asus Suite 2, it says it is running at 20% but that can't be right since its at 1600 RPM (max). The CPU fan stays at 1600 RPM and wont go down even though the temp is at 18 to 2...
