Everyones shooting conditions, not much wrong with it, but all reports say the canon better but harder to use manual focus with the ring.
Try renting the Canon, try it out for a bit and compare the images.

I had a 17-55 2.8 when I owned a 7D and I absolutely loved it. Hands down the sharpest lens wide open that I have ever used. I traded it for a 16-35mm 2.8 when I moved up to a 1DIII but I still miss that lens. Sharp, quick focus, IS for low-light photojournalism...

That's interesting Graham, maybe the extra sensor width is just revealing build tolerances in the production of these lenses that wouldn't normally appear on a 1.6 crop. I can only imagine mine goes a little bit wider if it reveals the edges of the sun...
