Just be polite.
Experts do advise call, and keep calling, but never to put pressure on the recruiter .
It is a balance between appearing eager and becoming a nuisance .

Joel would say that a great programmer effective that we did not hire anyone for over a year.
Best way to hire good programmers is to train them yourself.
